Manila (AFP) - Super Typhoon Nanmadol killed at least 13 people after hitting the Philippines. The number of casualties is expected to increase due to fading hope of finding them, said civil defense chief told AFP on Monday.

More than 61,000 people are still evacuated from their homes after last week's powerful storms hit the Philippines, particularly the northern edge of the main island of Luzon which caused landslides and flooding.

Thirteen people were killed mostly buried in landslides, including two children killed in northern Baguio landslide in the city garbage dump, said civil defense operations chief Benito Ramos.
Eight others were missing and feared lost at sea, river or buried under the rubbish, he told AFP.

"We are still looking for them, they might not still alive after two or three days," he said.

Ramos said the people killed and missing in garbage dumps are scavengers that feed from used goods that can be saved.

Poor people in this country refused to leave dangerous areas because they need to continue to live, he said.
